Highland Clearances by alex.graham

Highland Clearances

Taken at the site of Badbea, a village established during the Highland Clearances where people were evicted from their homes to make way for sheep.

The village is perched on the edge of a cliff on the Sutherland coast just north of Helmsdale. It is said that the winds were so bad children and livestock had to be tethered to stop them blowing into the sea.

Badbea Clearance Village by alex.graham

Badbea Clearance Village

We had beautiful weather on the day we left Helmsdale. Blue skies as far as the eye could see.

This is the monument to the people of Badbea.

View from the Croft

This is what we could see from the front of our croft, looking south east. The body of water is the Moray Firth I believe.
