Viscacha
![]() The Viscacha is a wild variety of chinchilla that lives in the andes mountains. This one was taken in Bolivia, at the base of Sajama mountain, very close to the border with Chile. Until very recently viscacha were said to be gone from the area because they had been over-hunted. We didn't find that to be the case- we saw three in just a few minutes on the road.

Lauca NP, just across the border. They belong
to the Chinchilla family, so it is not a
rabbit ;-). They indeed almost disappeared
because of overhunting but are still to be
seen easily in some spots, especially
national parks on the altiplano (Sajama in
Bolivia, Lauca in Chile, Salar de Surire,
etc.). More info on We also have plenty here in Chile, in The

I've never seen a rabbit with a long tail before. It's messing with my mind.
