• This platform is used for maintenance of the painting and is not normally in view.
  • The upper edge of the painting, normally hidden by the 'roof' over the visitors' heads.
  • Visitors are not allowed on the sand. The sand layer is just a couple of inches thick and lies on top of the museum restaurant
  • The roof of the panorama building. The panorama is lit by outside sunlight (hence the blueish tone of the panorama)

On the dune of the Panorama Mesdag

This panorama was taken as an alternative groupshot for the IPC conference in the Hague last year.

The International Panorama Council is an association of museums focusing on large, painted panoramas such as the Panorama Mesdag where the conference was held.

The Panorama Mesdag is a 120 meter long, 14 meter high cylindrical painting of the dunes of Scheveningen. Visitors are confined to a platform in the center of the painting. To hide the extend of the painting a 'faux terrain' of rail sand and some beach attributes was created. This ensures an immerive experience.

Talking about immersive experiences, there's also an interactive version

So your one of few who actually touched the sand?
    Very original!!

The sand actually has quite a slope to it here and there (it simulates a dune afterall) and there's quite a drop on the edge of the physical dune. So the sand gradually slides down off the 'roof' of the restaurant and every couple of months they have to shovel some sand back up the dune.
