old and new korea

    At the entrance to Gyeonbokgung,
the primary palace of Joseon Dynasty.

Update: This photo made it to the 2006 Angkor Photography Festival Flickr Contest's Top 100 and was put on display in Siem Reap, Cambodia. What is that nice feeling called... 'pride'? I'm full of it. :-)

Cool shot! Gyeongbokung is impressive, isn't it? They didn't have these Chosun guards when I lived there.

      Good eye.

They were supposed to be having some guard changing ceremony in front of the entrance, unfortunately it got cancelled because of bad weather (I just got there as it stopped raining).

I actually used Gyeonbokgung as a reference point in my attempts to explore Seoul on foot and by underground. With no street names and no numbered houses, the concentration it required I can only compare to learning a new language :-).

But I managed to reach the points I had designated as targets - then usually took a relaxed taxi ride back.

Great method for getting around Seoul. It can be quite confusing!

I lived in Anyang (outside Seoul) for a couple of years and used to love coming into this area of the city (Gyeongbokung, Insa-dong, Cheong-ro) to walk and shop for books. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

Myself, I only spent 6 days in Seoul (on a business trip - just got back to Eastern Europe a couple of days ago). Will be uploading many more images over the next couple of days. Just couldn't help clicking away in all directions while there.

Very clean juxtaposition, expresses the idea even at the thumbnail. (world through my eyes)

Score 6/10 (from the Score Me! group) adjusting the exposure in the upper right hand corner would balance this one out.

I was going to score you but I see you've got your five now so I'll just say I really like the combination of old and new here!
