Woodpeckers use their tongues to seek out insects under tree bark or in insect tunnels. The tongues are usually barbed and sticky to aid in retreiving the insects from their hiding holes. Unlike any other birds, other than hummingbirds, the woodpeckers can extend their tongues beyond their bills.
