Route to the Arctic

Jetty at Kilboghamn, Sorfjorden, Norway. Just behind these buildings is the car ferry terminus. From here, on the west coastal Route 17, an hour long sail to Jektvika takes you across the Arctic Circle line which lies just behind the distant snowy peaks. The weather for the trip was perfect.
As you can see Norwegians like red.

Reci, you knew it would work! ;)
So colorful and spectacular, and I also like that rusty ground in forefront.

Wow, I'm looking forward to heading up there this summer, though will be turning right into Swedish lapland...they like red houses there too. Great shot.

No we haven't repaired the shipwreck yet. Using this as a plan.

Deb: A trip to Norway is well worth it.

beutiful picture, yes Norwegians seem to love red.
in Sweden there are many red houses too,
but if I remember correctly the red is darker.....

  10. Pandiyan (89 months ago | reply)

Wonderful shot. I have seen more of Norway through pictures than through my geography books.

Where are you planning to go this year?

  11. Reciprocity (89 months ago | reply)

Thanks Hanny; Perhaps red is a good colour to see when there's 3m of snow around and you can't find your house? ;-)
As we travelled around there seemed to be small communities where rebellion was taking place. Once area,I remember, seemed to like shades of blue.
Pandiyan: Thank you, did you realise that, without knowing, we were typing the same thing to each other at the same time (telepathy?).
This year we're considering somewhere in France, but not as much driving as the Norway trip(I drove 4,000 miles in all).

Beautiful shot. Have you ever been to Longyearbyen? I've always been intrigued by the name and wondered what it would be like to visit there!

  13. Reciprocity (89 months ago | reply)

Thanks thermophle: No, we never made it that far. I've been checking it out. It's on a group of islands called Svalbard half way between the top of Norway and the North Pole (about the same latitude as the top of Alaska). As we were travelling in our car, once we reached Norway it was just over 1000miles to the Lofoten Islands and that was our furthest point. Longyearbyen is about another 800 miles further north (600 of those over sea). Apparently there are no roads between settlements on Svalbard you travel nowadays by jet-ski.
At the moment it is dark at Longyearbyen, the sun doesn't rise between 28th Oct and 14th Feb. To counteract that it doesn't set between 19th April and 23rd August.
So if you do go and want to take photos, choose the right time. ;-)

Oh yes :-) I like red too. I'd like to be there. To get the red and blue contrast more dramatic I would recommend the horizontal framing/cropping or a 6x6 square (see note). That brown foreground doesn't give me too much.

A really compelling photo. Compelling in that I could hardly pass by the thumbnail sketch without clicking, and also in that I don't think a photographer alive with a camera nearby could go by this scene and NOT try to capture it. Well Done! Delina
