Animal, Vegetable? No, Mineral!
A macro shot of detail of a large fused glass dish by British Artist:
Linda Matti 1990. Sadly I don't think she's still working in glass.
These are layers of different coloured glass rods that she made, laid
them down, fused them together then slumped them over a mould to make
the final piece. With sunlight shining through them they look like
coral or a colony of some tubular sea creatures. I'll post a shot of
the complete dish later.See here.

Beatiful shot of a beautiful work of art. Really love the way light shines through the glass. So soft and all.

Oh, what a beauty expert hands can create.

Thanks everybody for your lovely comments. Most glass really comes to life when you illuminate it. You generally get completely different effects whether it is lit by transmitted or reflected light. This is best in transmitted light.

Pretty!
how about the name (with a little reminiscence) Tubular Bells? ;)
I took a pic of special lamp in Búzios made of glasses - will post it when I get to that day. Promise!
Could you kindly invite me to the Modern Art Group? tnx

Thank you all so much for your kind comments.
>Semmeln; like tubular bells this glass, as with all good crystal glass, rings out when tapped. Living in Prague you are surrounded by beautiful glass and the sound of bells. Your invitation has been sent.

sea creatures indeed!
I've never seen this technique before....
again the lighting is beautiful.
Reciprocity (91 months ago)
Thanks HannyB, I'll put a shot of the complete dish up soon. The 'cane' technique is very prominent in the Venetian glass of Murano. Small pieces of cane or rod are also used to make the 'millefiore' pattern in glass paperweights. In this dish long individual lengths have been made and then fused together.

This is a beautiful shot!! and amazing glass work. When I saw this as a thumbnail my first thought was of a very large number of sperm making their way to the promised land. hmm... I must have reproduction on my mind...

Having something beautiful and high quality to photograph in the first place makes things a lot easier.

I often wonder what is in the mind of an artist...how many times would they need to experiment before they could come up with that piece of extraordinary sculptured glass.
Breathtaking.
