Frilled with Light

Frilled with Light by Reciprocity.
Taming Light #24
The experiments continue.

For new viewers: These are light refraction patterns or 'caustics' formed by a light beam passing through a shaped and textured plastic form. The pattern is captured directly on to 35mm film by removing the camera lens and putting the transparent object in its place. The processed film is digitally scanned for uploading. Please note these are not computer generated images but a true analogue of the way light is refracted by the objects I create.

I'd suggest that you're beyond 'experiment' with these photos, as your images appear to me to be transcending phenomena and presenting a clear aesthetic vision.

>mtnrockdhh; Thanks David but I still consider these as experiments - each image is usually from a different way of working with the plastic.

True, Alan...but then every painting by Van Gogh was created using different relative amounts of paint...were they all experimental? Not to be beligerent... :-)

Would you say you have a reasonable idea how each of these images is going to come out prior to their being created? Or are you often surprised by the results?

I am amazed at such beauty work! It does not matter how many times I see your work, I am floored with each photograph you create. And, the fact that it is not digitally enhanced demands that much more of my respect and admiration.

Thank you all for your wonderful comments and faves.
>funky GB: they're small things I create out plastic.
>Felix: I only use film, I don't have a digital. Usually take two shots of each image at different exposures.
>David: Yes but he could see what he was painting, I have to make it first and only see what it looks like when I look through the viewfinder, some work some don't. I can choose the basic position of the elements and the colours and I've learnt a few tricks to get certain textural effects but apart from that it's fairly hit or miss and pleasant surprises. This was 'extracted' from an image that was supposed to be like this but didn't quite work.

True enough. OK I'll buy the 'still experimental' tag, since one could argue all photographs are experimental as we don't "see" the results until we've made the image. You're working within the physical constraints of the photographic system, with some additional constraints resulting from creation and utilization of the plastic forms. We both employ techniques that involve serendipity to a certain extent, and I suppose that's an additional attraction to the technique. I'll stand by my comment, however, that your images are beyond mere recording of phenomena, and to my eye at least qualify as art. So, you've reduced me to saying, yet again...killer image, dude. :-)

Beautiful, Alan - you're beginning to develop impressive control over the forms - even if this didn't quite match what you thought you were after! (I think I definitely like it better ....!!

Oops, sorry missed the reply till now, yeah I wonder? That would be cool. You wouldnt need UV though thats the whole point of it ;) I used to put that stuff the contact lens optician puts in your eyes to see scratches etc., to make my eyes and drinks glow in night clubs, but instead of saying "Hey you look cool" everyone says "ooh can i have a go?" and you just end up spending the whole night handing out little eye sticks...
