River of Light

River of Light by Reciprocity.
Bending Light #49

Continuing the series of refraction patterns of light passing through glass and other transparent objects. These are taken direct on to 35mm film in the camera and scanned from either prints or direct from the film.
This one is from a coloured studio glass bowl and shows the natural colours of the light transmitted through the glass.

I was talking to a glass artist the other day and he told me that when artists have finished a piece and they hold it up to the sun, the projected refraction patterns are referred to as "the spirit of the piece". In this series you've found spirits, sprites, dragons and fish to mention but a few things that your wonderful imaginations can conjure up.

Another great photogram! The spirit of light that I see here goes back to my theory that there are lost souls trapped inside the image, in this case, there are two of them trapped inside a box!! :)

I thought o a river of light as well at first, but couldn`t this also be some magical fabric, flowing through a seamstress` hands?
Anyway, beautiful effect and colours, making the imagination work overtime.

Ahh now this is a coloring I really like. I said I prefered your more black and white results... because the patterns were my favorite aspect. But the subtle colorings here really compliments it wonderfully. That it fills the frame really adds to it, makes you imagine this cosmic river extending on.

I like the notion of each piece having its own "spirit". It is my observation that while each unique glass presents a lot of variation, there is usually a recurring theme for each individual.

very fractal. I like the lighter colors in this one, especially the light blue. the idea of 'spirit' of the glass is an interesting one.

Thank you everybody for your wonderful comments and your alternative 'visions'.
>SEngstrom; Stefan, I suppose the basic outline and shape of the refraction pattern is determined by the general shape of the glass. Since most pieces are generally long cylinders you will have a cylindrical lens effect superimposed by surface lumps and applied shapes. Other more defined shapes, rectangle, spheres, polished sides etc I assume will present a different set patterns. Is that the way you see it?

First thing that jumped to mind when I saw this was " chiffon" and as I didn't know why, I checked my dictionary :)

Chiffon:
1 :a sheer fabric especially of silk
2 :resembling chiffon in sheerness or softness
3 :having a light delicate texture

.....so now I know why !

The pieces I use are more round and actually quite similar in size and overall idea. The most important factor I notice is the quality of sharp vs. rounded features on the surface. Each piece has a quite wide range of expression but I often see families of features within the same piece.

Excellent Alan - the subtle colours work really well in this one. I agree with Poekie that it has a fabric-like quality. It reminds me of some of the cloth that can be used for Irish dancing costumes - if I can find a pic I'll post it.

Reciprocity  Pro User  says:

Thanks everyone for your comments it looks like the cloth is winning.
>Stefan; are you saying it is tending to be fractal or that if random surface features group then similar features form as in coagulation?

Alan - what I mean is that I see the same fetures in the resulting image, although to some extent that is a reflection of repetition of structure in the glass itself.
