Thanks for posting this and your other excellent shots to the Stoke Newington group, Alan. Marc Bolan has a plaque now, but I didn't know about Karl Marx's son.
Dan, it's a dustmen's strike. And they didn't do those by halves in the 1970s, this would be February of the 'Winter of Discontent', the last days of Jim Callaghan's government.
(I believe I remember another since then, but with nothing like the mountain ranges of rubbish here on the common.)

I remember the strike. I lived in Gibson Gardens at the bottom of the High Street at the time and our communal garden was piled high with rubbish - rats were a big problem.
