Merrymaker tickets for the trip from Colchester to York on the 7th April 1979, by High Speed Train!

This trip was laid on primarily for the employees of Paxman in Colchester, being involved in the construction of the diesel engines. After they had taken up what they wanted it was opened up to the public on a first come, first served basis, no booking by telephone allowed. So we presented ourselves Saturday morning (early!) at Colchester booking office to discover only 1st class left!

Trip was originally booked for Edinburgh, but because of the Penmanshiel Tunnel disaster on 17 March 1979 it was cut back to York.

Out from Colchester (at about 6am) via Chelmsford, Stratford and onto the ECML. Back via ECML to Peterborough, then cross country through Bury St Edmunds to Ipswich and Colchester.

Superb Day! Got to see inside the engine compartment at York station (invited in! - probably because so many Paxman employees made up complement) Spent day at Railway Museum and walking City Walls!
