Using Martin Prihoda's lighting technique from the recent Strobist.com post...
Shot on Shelter Island in San Diego, Ca.
Strobist info: D300, 2 sb-800's and 1 sb-24. f/9 1/250sec iso 250
Camera Left Strobe= sb800 on remote su-4 mode on 1/2 power (should have lowered the power, the right side of models faces got too much light). About 30 degrees behind models with homemade gobo to restrict lens flare (removed for setup shot)
Camera Right Strobe= sb-24 on 1/4 power, 30 degrees behind models with gobo. Triggered by pocket wizard on headphone splitter with 2nd sb800.
Main light= sb800 overhead hand held by assistant. Shot thru umbrella, choked up close. 1/4 power. Triggered by pocket wizard on headphone splitter with sb-24.

Great lighting and posing. I agree about the camera-left strobe being too strong.

Andrew-
Thanks for the heads-up! FWIW, you can always PW the SB-24, and SU-4 slave mode both SB-800's, to minimize your wire run.

nice set of photos, Iooks really good with the light balance. Can I ask about the colouring compared to the others, is this just raw conversion, or is there some colour layer added? thanks

Thanks!
in response to the last to comments...
1. unfortunately i cant slave both sb800's- one has a broken lcd which you can actually use in most modes, but in su-4 the power is displayed in an area that you cant see.
2. 99% of the post is done in lightroom. Brought it into photo shop to remove a couple of cig's from the ground and lighten the faces just a touch... all the color effects are lightroom stuff.

That's a VERY good shot!
I like these ones very much: the lighting adds a lot and makes the pic interesting without being too obtrusive.

Saw your post on strobist.com. I like what you have done with Martin Prihoda's look and adapted it to small strobes. I think you have transferred the affect perfectly. Well Done!

nicely done, both in camera work and post processing.

I actually like the stronger kicker light on the left....I think for this particular shot it gives it more punch and more of a 3D look....if this had been a portrait of say an old lady where you wanted soft light, then yes I would say it was way too strong....to me that rim light, especially on their clothes, gives this much more dimension

Incredible image. how much post processing was involved here? Would you kindly share some details? Your work is out of this world!

How come that the face of the second man from left isn't blown out?
Anyhow, this is a great photo. Keep up the good work.

Nice post work, and the lighting is great too

my guess is that the second from the left guy got light blockage from the leftmost guy (check their leg shadows on the ground). i think the lighting effect, plus his body language relative to the camera make him appear to be the center focus of the photo, which may or may not have been intentional.

Great cross-lighting, agree that the light from the left is a bit hot. Background & models make up for it - a great magazine shot, location & light would also work well for a cd liner...

Great light, most parts about the image I absolutely love. Except the two awkward looking harsh shadows on their faces. I would soften them up in PP. Really interesting photo.

Excellant shot, so what adjustment did you actually do in Lightroom. How did you get the "comic" book affect??
Thanks Chad

Only one thing is strange, the cross shadows on the feet
I've seen the delerium video photo shoot and I don't remembering seeing the cross shadows.

Ok -- is it only me, or the photo is just *not* straight?
I mean isn't the sea... Inclined? Just a little bit, though enough to be noticed without great effort...

re: differences with Martin's style, he uses a beauty dish as main and 2 reflector heads with grid spots all 3 which are more controlled than the bare speedlights used here, hence the cross shadows.

Hello all,
First off thanks for all the nice comments I really appreciate it. It was a very nice surprise to have so much great feedback from this photo.
I will try to give some info on my post processing for this, and all my images, dont know if it will help... but here goes...
As mentioned before, there is very very little photoshop work done on this photo. I removed several cig butts with the cloning tool and that is it. The color and everything else is done in Lightroom. More and more these days I am doing most of my post work in lightroom. The ability to save presets and quickly run a photo through several options quickly (by mousing over presets in the develop module and watching the preview image in the top left corner) is an incredible resource.
As far as what I actually did to this image... good question. Most of my processing effects come from simply playing with sliders until i get something I like. I have messed with them enough to know which controls do what, but there is no particular method to how I go about it. I usually start by adjusting the exposure to a place that I like, often bringing up the fill light and down the recovery, which helps to give the image a bit wider dynamic range, or I guess a more evenly dispersed dynamic range. Often after that I will adjust colors in the camera control section to bring the color to levels that I like. This is all to bring the photo to a "normal" look. Once i have it there I can begin to get "arty" with it. At this point i will play with vibrance, saturation, clarity, vignetting,, individual color saturation, and sometimes split toning. Again, I cant tell you exactly what I did to this one because its always different. I suppose I could list off the values from the sliders, but it would do you no good, as this processing effect looks good on this image, but on another it might look terrible.
Once quick note about one of the important adjustments in this, and many of my photos. I use the Clarity adjustment quite a bit. I believe it increases "localized contrast", which is what Brenden does in photoshop with the "unsharp mask" filter.
The biggest thing is to experiment, and then experiment some more. When putting together these images I started by wanting a cold "metalic" look like those in Martin's shots, so I got something I liked by adjusting individual color saturations and what not. You can see some of these shots on my flickr page. Then I took this shot into photoshop to remove the cig butts, and when I finished there I thought i was done with the image. But when it was back in Lightroom I decided I wanted a bit more "pop" to the photo so I decided to bring some color back in. I think I got the warm tones to come back by adjusting the color temp. I enjoyed what it did for the photo and so did the client.
Anyway, I realize that is not very specific help on my post, but the main thing I want to stress is to experiment... lots. When I get something I like I save it as a preset, and the one thing I notice is that sometimes a preset looks great for a particular image, and terrible on the next. It has much to do with the lighting, as has been mentioned, but also the subject matter, etc.
Finally, if anyone wants to check out more of my work I just posted a makeshift portfolio on my site at www.jorgensenphotography.com .
Feel free to contact me with any specific questions. Thanks again for all the positive feedback!
