Cookie Gun Explained

    Newer Older

This is my Cookie Gun, a 28-80mm lens attached to a flash so that I can zoom the flash like an adjustable snoot. By putting a cookie (custom image or slide) between the flash and the zoom lens, I can also project an image onto a surface like a projector.

    Image taken with this here.

Here I was trying to figure out a way to get more control of the light coming through a cookie and I kept thinking....What have my fiance and I always said about the bat signal... It needs a lens! so i was trying to come up with something using a magnifying glass, but couldn't think of an elegant and reliable way to build it. then I come across this today and let out a Homer Simpson-ish "Doh!...Why didn't I think of that?"

I used the cookie gun again last night just as a zoomable snoot and stuck in half a gel for the gradient effect in the background.

cool idea -- I use just plain vanilla IKEA-lamps. ("hot" light not a strobe)
But I have some old, unused lenses, so I may give that a try !!

PS : I've tried it on a Halogen-light and the results were disappointing
      1) in my setup the shape of the light bulb always was visible
      2) my lamp had a build-in reflector with some pattern -- that pattern showed up on the "output"
      3) depending on the lens, the rear element may be small, collecting only a fraction of the available light

stargazer95050, 2) my lamp had a build-in reflector with some pattern -- that pattern showed up on the "output"

Actually this is the case with the flash that I use mostly with my cookie gun. It has a 'grill' pattern that is always there.

I think this is something that demands either a real projector (high output bulb plus a fresnel) or a flash like in my design.
