00 Bronze axe head #0338-81 Aes Rude axe head

axe-head. 500-300BC. 80.6grams. Italy mint. Aes Grave. Crawford 000/02 Aes Rude. Obverse: Axe head. Reverse: as obverse. Scarce.

Axe-head probably used as a currency bar. The axe design is quite typical for about 500BC. The blade has evidently broken in use and the axe head was deliberately sawn off which shows it has a likely purpose as a currency item rather than merely being a discarded axe. A nice mix of surface colours.
