Moon Rise in the Sacramento Valley

There are lots of great photos of the full moon this past weekend. I was lucky enough to be in the Sacramento Valley of central California, exploring the wildlife areas and the Sutter Buttes.

This is taken from Gray Lodge Wildlife Area.

    When is bigger not better?

Interesting. I've never been to this Gray Lodge Wildlife Area. Think it's worth a visit? It seems that whenever I go into a designated "wildlife area" I rarely see much wildlife. But when I go someplace, like a golf course, I see more!

Nice catch Alan! You were closer to my neck of the woods.

fantastic... I watched the moonrise as I drove up 101 in marin/ sonoma county. I looked just like this.

lovely unusual pastels from the still setting sun.
I read on someone else's page that this was to be the largest moon of 2009. The closest to the earth in its orbit during any full moon....

Thanks everyone - nice recreation on a Tuesday evening, eh?

@NaturalLight - John - Yes - fits nicely with your recent series of the dunes. Great stuff!

@Penelope - Thanks. I hope you were someplace good too.

@Gregory - The whole "wildlife scene" in the central valley is something else. Definitely worth a visit while ducks are "in season". You might understand an alternate meaning to the phrase "good shot". More on this later.

@mtnrockdhh - David - I see, you are nearby! Wish I had more time to explore.

@maxxsmart - Steve - I can totally imagine that your drive looked like this. Just subtract the snow covered Sierras in the distance!

@bcgart - Belinda - I heard that too, but I still needed my 200 and a telextender to make it look big on my monitor!

Oh lucky you. This is quite a sight to see. Wow....

Oh wow amazing! I have never yet taken a good photo of the moon itself. It seems to move so fast and before you can get over your amazement of the sight of it, its too late to decide what lens to shoot it with.

Lovely. The soft (haze-induced) colors add to the image. Wonderful work.

wow.. it just looks amazingly large. fantastic! (i tried to get a photo of the moon... but i am going to blame my bad attempts on the fact that i have a not so hot tele lens.. and that i live in the city... not my skills of course!)

Glad you got this one. I saw it from the other coast, didn't shoot it. Cool.

@onwatersedge - Charles - I was scratching my head trying to figure out how you knew when my birthday was. No searches on Google gave it away. Then I see that my friend joe_az (who does not have time for Flickr, he is one of my Blockhead friends), gave it away. Haha! This was my birthday (Jan 13) trip.

Thanks everyone! Photographing the moon is not so easy, but I would conclude that the single most import factor is to shoot it at dawn or dusk, when the brightness of the moon is close to the brightness of the surrounding landscape and sky. Cameras just don't have the dynamic range to capture a bright moon at night and also show details in the surrounding landscape.

I love this photo. It has great colour. I am still waiting to get a good image of the full moon rising, I need to keep trying.
