Dune 45

Newer Older

Dune 45 in Sossusvlei is one of the most beautiful sand dunes in the world. Standing over 170 meters, it is composed of 5 million year old sand that was brought by the Orange River from the Kalahari Desert.
It is a star dune. Star dunes are pyramidal sand mounds with slipfaces on three or more arms that radiate from the high center of the mound. They tend to accumulate in areas with multidirectional wind regimes. Star dunes grow upward rather than laterally.

(One of the two main reasons for my recent Africa trip, to experience this natural marvel, finally came true on Day 6 =)

Featured in the Learn Composition by Example Composition principle thread on the S-curve (and the matching The Image Composer article)

A very powerful subject, the curve here is beautifully sinuous. There is no need for detail in either half of the image: cropped tighter, it could be a simple two-tone abstract held together by the completeness of the curve: there is no point within the frame unaffected by it.

Love the way you show the scale of this enormous sand dune by leaving the field and trees at the bottom in the picture.
