One of the original 3 mine shafts at the Homestake Gold Mine in Lead South Dakota, The Yates shaft is now one of 2 shafts for the Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL) which will be used to run physics experiments to study dark matter at more than 4,500 feet below the surface.
