The 'Devas' (Guardian Gods) of Angkor Thom's southern gate

The 'Devas' (Guardian Gods) of Angkor Thom's southern gate

The southern gate of Angkor Thom can be reached via a causeway that extends about 50 meters across a moat.
On both side of the causeway they are railings guarded by stone figures, 54 on each side.
On the left side are the 'Devas' (Guardian Gods, seen above), while the 'Asuras' (Demon Gods) are on the right side.

It represents a famous Hindu myth.... the Churning of the Ocean.

The 'Devas' are pulling the head of the great serpent "Vasuki" while the 'Asuras' are pulling the serpent's tail in the opposite direction. The myth relates that as the serpent is pulled alternatingly back and forth, the ocean began to churn and thus freeing up precious objects lost within.
