Gorgeous iceberg 7 [Le Toit du Monde]

The ice is so damn cool, and so very bizarre looking. The texture looks very much like plastic. Wild. The tall part is perhaps 9 or 10 storeys tall.

Now, some of us (the crazier ones among us) might look at an iceberg like this and think, "Wow, I'd love to go ice climbing on that!" I wouldn't recommend it. I just saw a movie about a guy who tried ice climbing on icebergs. The ice is under tremendous pressure and shatters easily. Hammering in an ice axe can easily cause huge cracks which shatter deep into the core of the iceberg. Plus they often have a poorly adhering surface layer of ice that easily shatters off -- I suspect from low density rain and condensation which has formed a weak, low density layer on the surface of the iceberg. Not fun! Save the ice climbing for waterfalls.

This photo was recently printed in Le Toit du Monde -- a magazine published by the Association des francophones du Nunavut. It was used as the opening photo for an article about global warming. Also published in the same issue were this, this, this, and this in an article written about the hike documented in this photo set.

LOL. It looks kind of phallic, don't you think? Kidding aside, this is one of the more interesting iceberg photos I've seen.
