But of course in this part of the world as soon as they have white hair they all say they are 100 years old.

I guess I just don't get it. I looked at your poor grammar in the description more than I looked at the picture. All those prepositional phrases make my head spin. Which Somali border? Where's the predicate? If I can worry this much about the description, the picture isn't that great in my book. I think portrait would work much better than landscape in this instance.

You're misreading the sentence, abardwell. This man is the head of the clan. In other words he is akin to the chief. If you insert chief:

The chief of a small clan of nomadic shepherds on the somali border.

Not specifying which Somali border is a lack of detail, not a grammatical issue.

Nice technically but nothing comes from him except for indifference and/or resignation. That's a fat problem in a portrait.

This only works because of the way the guy looks. Old people, poor kids in Africa, homeless in Paris they do the trick all the time. If I would take a picture of a regular John Doe in the street in exactly the same way, noone would dream of saving it.
'We wanna see his eyes', they would say, and: 'why is he so centered?' And they would be right.

@abardwell: accepted the criticism on the pic, but not so happy on the grammar lesson(see expatty's comment)!! BTW it is the border with Ethiopia near Shinile (warzone).

to all the rest from deleteme group: wow this is exciting! some sort of masochistic exercise but i love it!! thx

@sophieMuc: I am a big fan of your photos, getting a save fm you is great!!! thx

First of all, Abarwell comments are complete bs. Who gives a damn that the grammar is bad. We're supposed to be judging the photos not the captions!
Also, I don't agree with Dvaires. I think indifference and resignation are powerful emotions and some of the best portraits display just those qualities.
nevertheless, I don't think that the profile does the photo justice. Like someone else said, seeing a bit more of his eyes would have been nice. All in all, I agree that if it weren't an old man from a third world country, the photo wouldn't have been anything special.

Quite a beautiful shot and a great expression.

My first impulse was to save.

There's tons of information to tell me all I need to know...
I don't need to see more of his eyes for example...
but somethings not grabbing me.

What's not working for me, as best I can figure,
is the high value of the staff and the bokeh behind his head.
It draws my eye away from the direction he's looking
and fights the lines of his hand and face that are working to lead through his eye
to the bokeh line on the right.

Really like the tones on this, but I find the space on the left is a little too much I want to feel he's looking at something. There is also nothing to connect to in the background on the right.

Not much you can improve with this shot - great subject, B&W was the best way to go, the clarity of the subject, framing is good, as obviously is the cropping choice (or lack thereof).

For me the background is just a bit too blurry, if you know what I mean - my eyes slide off the guy to the background too easily, trying to make it, the background, fit into the pattern.

Apart from that small gripe, great pic.

This is an outstanding portrait. It is done in a perfect way technically, the composition is great and so is the B&W conversion. I don't see how the background can be too blurry in a portrait, but then I don't understand either why some people suggest central composition on other shots.

This is a fantastic shot, the subject is great the B&W conversion is perfect and the use of DoF flawless.
Being picky at it (very) the only thing I would like to see is a shift in the angle to the right to include one of the eyes of the person. Still this is a fantastic portrait, one of those you expect to see in National Geographic.

First of all, kudos for going to the Somali border. That alone wins you 5 points :-).

You did an excellent job with capturing his profile and expression. Excellent DOF and framing of the shot. The B&W works well, especially in contrasting the white beard with his dark skin. The light reflects nicely off his cheekbones and skull, emphasizing his age. I wonder what he's looking at (ESPN???).

I am no expert in photography, but one upside of this portrayed is its social significance. I think its a great picture, why?

1 - In a culture which considers photography a taboo, to be quick enough to take the picture of an elder in such contemplative posture earns the photographer some points;

2- In terms of security in a land of turmoil, where photographers may well be considered intrusive by the authorities that be, taking this pictures earns the photographer another brownie;

3 - Finally, speaking of the picture itself, the photographer has brilliantly captured the graceful aura with which elders of this age are associated. Simply, the emotional content of the picture which strikes out immediately must be applauded.

Thanks, Adritzz and I hope to see more beautiful work from you. I will certainly add this picture to my favourites.
