Well, I got to work this morning and the day just turned into another day from hell. We had cleaned up the virus outbreak yesterday thinking we had won -- and came in this morning to a NEW outbreak. This time it was some other virus and it was taking advantage of a buffer overflow in all versions of windows. Trend Antivirus didn't know about this new virus so it was just slipping past un-noticed. By mid afternoon Trend had issued a new pattern file which when deployed help contain this mess.
Microsoft was so nice as to have a patch for this particular overflow for Windows 2000, XP and 2003 but NOT Windows NT4. So all of our old, stupid and lame old servers are basically only protected by Trend Antivirus. And that is not much with the constant stream of variances!
So anyway..... again I got no work done all day, didn't even look at my email and just generally felt stressed out.
At least we were finished up by 6:30pm today instead of 8pm. And I hope this will be the end of it.
PS: Where is this virus coming from you ask? Our company was recently purchased and we now have a direct MPLS connection into their network. They are very lax with seucirty..... so our servers are getting hammered directly from their network over the MPLS. All the blocking I'm doing in my firewalls has no effect since this is a direct conduit into the network. Because I am pretty strick with security on our network and I have the firewalls all locked down, our internal servers have never really been kept totally up to date with all patches... and its never really been a problem. But NOW it is..... so we have to get busy and bring all servers up to full spec.
