To test out how severe his addiction is.. try chaining him inside a room during sunrise and sunset, observe carefully if he has physical symptom like un-nerving, restlessness, sweating and eventually anger and frustration.. Although you should feed him while chained as that reaction can be confused with hunger. :]

Please don’t tell him who gave you this advice.
