fern at Long Hilly Explore #4 06-02-2009

Long Hilly is an old mining area near Tuatapere, Southland, New Zealand. It was called this by the Chinese miners who settled in the area looking for gold. Gold was found, but the conditions were so tough that many died. For a great site to look at New Zealand Chinese settlement in the gold rush days, this one by NZ Historic Places Trust/Pouhere Taonga (Pouhere taonga means 'precious places' in Maori) is excellent.

thank you to all who have commented on this shot - it was hand-held, holding my breath, and hoping that there would be no breath of wind while I took it! The colours are so intense and I swear that is actually the colour of the ferns...
The Catlins and Southland are stunning - if you're visiting New Zealand, GO THERE! Oh, and go to the West Coast of NZ as well. Actually, just emigrate - you can't do justice to the scenery in a lifetime I think (and I've been here all of mine).

Woohoo! thanks soooo much Natalia! I hadn't seen that... My second ever. I was so pleased with this shot, with the manual focus on my Tamron 90 (manual everything actually) I had to work a bit to get a shot that was in focus. Good for the eye-hand coordination!

Thank you so much!! that's very high praise indeed. Actually I have two versions - one with a crop much higher than this one, so probably a lot like your thoughts! After playing around with it I preferred the square crop, and my only thought was to crop a little bit more off the left ---- still not sure about that.
Yes, handheld, manual focus, manual aperture, manual shutter speed - the very best way to learn patience quickly!!
