fern at Long Hilly Explore #4 06-02-2009
![]() Long Hilly is an old mining area near Tuatapere, Southland, New Zealand. It was called this by the Chinese miners who settled in the area looking for gold. Gold was found, but the conditions were so tough that many died. For a great site to look at New Zealand Chinese settlement in the gold rush days, this one by NZ Historic Places Trust/Pouhere Taonga (Pouhere taonga means 'precious places' in Maori) is excellent.
