@Owen: Yes, I was driving down the A303. It was the first leg
of my Cornish adventure – i.e. getting to Cornwall! I went to
Penzance. It's a long way!
@WadeB: The site is fenced off but I paid a
few quid to go in. There's also a 'please do
not cross' rope around the actual monument,
but my measily 3x zoom sufficed :)

I don't know. The scene is nice, but the
composition doesn't thrill me. Crammed in the
frame, it makes me feel a bit claustrofobic.
There are several cool elements but they
don't work together in the shot. Also I think
it is too bad that the shadows are cut off on
the left. The birds are close to the stones,
which makes the sky seem a bog empty space.
Maybe you could crop away some of it.

OK, fess up. You cropped this down. The IXUS
doesn't shoot in 1:1 aspect ratio, right?
Anyhow, great shot.
The birds did it, you know.

nowt wrong with a bit of cropping is there?
(as i might say if i was from Yorkshire)
...and yeah, it's a bit tight, but any
wider and there would have been bits of other
stones protruding into the shot.

gridrunner: I voted this saveme. Personal
taste on my part is to have a special,
revered place for photos that haven't been
cropped, burned, dodged or manipulated in
special ways in photoshop. But even though
your shot was cropped, it wasn't cropped a
lot and it's still great!

BTW -- nothing wrong with dodging, burning,
cropping or special photoshop work. It's just
different...

newhampster – Fair enough. I happen to think
nearly ALL photos should be processed. It's
no different to what would have been done in
a dark room if one were processing one's own
analogue film. How many professional
photographers take their film to a 1 hour
photo place and make do with the 'default'
developing?
Different schools of thought, that's all.
And thanks for the vote! :)

Great monument, but not a great photo of it.
I don't get any idea of the size of these
from the angle you used. If you'd got down a
bit lower, maybe. And aren't there more
stones than these?
I'd also have liked to have seen some
longer shadows - maybe going back later or
getting up earlier. Sky looks blown, too. A
shorter exposure would have given you more
details in the clouds and a more dramatic
sky.
The detail of the moss on the stones is
cool though.

the birds are real. and, yes... i wanted to
convey a sense of it standing alone in nature
so i waited until all the other visitors were
out of shot (some behind stones etc).
unfortunately i guess that does leave nothing
to compare it to scale-wise.
i was using a tripod so i should have run
up and done a thumbs-up :)

Thank you everyone. A close call, as it was
with my previous (and only other) Safe
cracker.
I agree with almost all of the crit, except
that I don't think it's at all blurry. I used
a tripod. The slight fuzziness, visible only
on the largest size, is due to the limited
electronics in my camera.
But the scale thing is a good point. Maybe
I should have got one person in shot for
comparison. I didn't think of that at the
time.
And if you think it's too tightly cropped,
again maybe it is, but for this shot it
wasn't possible to go wider without other the
stones protruding into the photo. You might
prefer this one:

I like the way this shot gives you the
feeling of being up there among the stones.
You don't get that if you take the whole
monument, as it becomes clear you're standing
outside the circle.
