3 cheers for the f'ing internet, mate. And yes, a nice "little film" :) And for a change, the picture looked exactly like what it was supposed to look like, without it being something that was easily searchable. If that makes any sense.

What an amazing story! The untimely breakdown of your MacBook could almost act as the climax of your own short film. Did they ever tell you how they came about your photo? You'd think they'd at least send you a ticket to see the movie in theatres ;)

You know, CC and all is great, but if they're gonna make money, so am I! I've earned almost $1000 off my photos on Flickr this year, selling them to Newspapers and magazines who contacted me out of the blue. I also know of pictures of my cat being used as wallpaper on myspace accounts, which I am very cool with as well. I would be so jazzed to see one of my photos featured so prominently in a movie! Congrats.

fetching  Pro User  says:

i just read your blog about this. I have to say, what a shame. This is everything I hate about Creative Commons and the mentality that surrounds it. I'm not trying to be confrontational, or am I criticizing you, but to think you were offered money by a major corporation and you turned it down....for what? Your photo is being used to make them more money and not you, or your family or even a charity of your choice is benefiting from it. How many bags of groceries for the poor could you have bought? Or warm coats. Or anything...it doesn't matter. Your image had value and Creative Commons in all its glory helped convince you that giving it away is for some greater good.

@fetching I will give away any image from my flickr stream if it would made it in such a movie as Iron Man. For free. Well done, Jeremy!

Jane M.  Pro User  says:

fetching - Maybe he wasn't "giving it away...for some greater good," maybe he just didn't want the money. Some people sell their photographs for survival and some just take photos for pleasure. Being credited in a film as such could be enough of a satisfaction and an honour!

DSK Samways  Pro User  says:

There are problems with CreativeCommons (mainly blurred legal lines and stuff), but giving work away for free isn't a problem; it's the whole point of a CC license. It would have been a bit hypocritical to take money for something that has already been submitted to the public domain, regardless of whether it could be potentially used to save the whales or something. Adactio remained true to the spirit of CC, which I think is particularly admirable under the circumstances.

The money aspect of it simply pales in comparison to the fact that this dude's photo is backing Jeff Bridges in a movie. That's the American Dream right there, dollars notwithstanding.

@ fetching - uh, you call that "non-confrontational and non-critical"? This is some definition of confrontation and critical with which I wasn't previously acquainted!! Pure passive aggressive twaddle. Or to turn it back on you, I think it's terrible that you aren't donating the time you spend on Flickr to delivering groceries to the poor.

Jeremy, it's your shot and your art as you rightly say. The studio also gives money to charity as do all the stars. There's absolutely no reason to feel guilty about not taking money to give to charity (what a silly statement) and no reason to feel guilty about not taking money because you weren't greedy. It's refreshing to meet someone who's primary motivation in taking photographs ISN'T to make money.

I feel terrible that you're being patronized and insulted for essentially not being greedy. I was a bit shocked when I logged in just now and saw these additional comments on your stream. Hope this spleen venting against the studios, capitalism, amateur photographers, - whatever seems to be driving the commentators - fades out quickly and you can enjoy having your photo used by Ironman again.

On the other hand, you've got another nifty story to tell now, so there's a bit of a bright side. Take care!

@adactio

Are you an aspiring professional photographer?
Posted 13 months ago. ( permalink )

view profile

adactio  Pro User  says:

@ Haynes Photography: No, I am not an aspiring professional photographer.

I am an amateur photographer. I am an amateur writer. I am an amateur chef. I am an amateur musician.

Translated from its French origin to the English "lover of", the term "amateur" reflects a voluntary motivation to work as a result of personal passion for a particular activity.

Jon Haynes Photography  Pro User  says:

I love flickr and I think most free image services on line are wonderful, but in the last 3 years I have seen many photo jobs sort of dry up. I think you should be excited about them using your image.
I'm currently in the process of re-developing my clients, I'm re-tooling my entire look to create a niche so I can buy groceries again, so I can pay my measly mortgage. I know I'm in a dying industry and need to figure out that niche quickly.

congrats

view profile

adactio  Pro User  says:

fetching asked "how am i patronizing you? "

By assuming you know my motivations (and assuming that those motivations are in any way connected to Creative Commons). Did it ever occur to you that I might have agreed to them using my picture because:

a) they asked nicely and
b) it's Iron Man, for crying out loud!

If you have a beef with Creative Commons, that's fine but don't try to use me as a reverse poster child.

I didn't criticise you when you defended your right to use your picture as you saw fit during that whole YouTube video imbroglio so please don't criticise me for using my picture as I see fit.

Adactio, I forgot to mention this just now - coincidentally enough that shot happened to be one of my favourite moments in the movie. I love the way they positioned Robert Downey Jr. and Jeff Bridges (because they two men looked so powerful in that pose) and I am astounded to know now that the background they used was a "casual" (for lack of better word) shot.

I'm thrilled for you. :)
