Sunrise at East Inlet, Pittsburg, New Hampshire

Had the chance to spend a long weekend in Pittsburg, the northernmost town in New Hampshire. Pittsburg is 420 miles from NYC. The nearest McDonalds is 50 miles away. The nearest stop light is 70 miles away. The population density is around 1. On Sunday, I got up at 4:30am to kayak on East Inlet, near Second Connecticut Lake. We didn't see any moose, but plenty of osprey, hawks, herons, and loons.

This shot is a blend of a 3-shot handheld bracketed exposure from a moving kayak. The trick it seems is to set the shooting mode to continuous high speed to minimize the amount of movement between exposures.

It just means I set the camera to bracket exposures, the first exposure being properly exposed, the second being underexposed by 2 stops, and the third being overexposed by two stops. I think pretty much every camera has an exposure bracketing feature. I then use Photomatix's Exposure Fusion tool to combine the images. It mimics the effect of using a graduated neutral density filter over the sky so that the foreground appears brighter and more details are visible. Handheld just means that I didn't use a tripod.

I just used my hiking daypack, nothing special, not even waterproof. I initially had my gear in zip-lock bags, but the water was so calm that I didn't need to take much care to cover my gear.

Thanks andrew! Have tried to blend the photo, but could not get the result as your photo.
Big learning curve to me :-)

Wow, man, I'm not even sure how you managed this, but it is really cool. I don't think I knew there was any sort of software to manage a moving exposure HDR thing... Very nice work. Looks like a peaceful kayak trip.

I love this. I don't want to step into any tech talk, but doesn't the D90 have an in-camera feature where you can combine several shots into one?

-- Not that I'm aware of. Nikon cameras do have an Active D-Lighting option, which is an attempt to increase the dynamic range of a single photo.
