Lower Manhattan Skyline from the Staten Island Ferry, New York City
Four-shot panorama of the lower Manhattan skyline from the Staten Island Ferry using my 50mm prime lens handheld. The ride is free. It was my first trip to Staten Island, though I never left the ferry terminal. A schooner was crossing the bay far ahead of us. At least I think it's a schooner. Stitched with Hugin.
Single exposure / f/7.1 / 50mm (75mm=) / ISO 200 / CPL

Great pano, Andrew. I've been thinking about doing some panos, so I'm looking for some good stitching software for a Mac, as the Photoshop automated stitch is pretty bad. This is stitched well, and it is a great view of the city. I like the fact that it isn't some killer sunset or anything. It is really nice to see a well done photo that doesn't rely on super weather. It has a good glow and I can't believe you did this handheld!

Thanks. Yeah, I like Microsoft's ICE, though it's only for Windows, so I usually use Hugin, which lets you define control points and is free. It also has a bunch of different projection output options (architectural, equirectangular panini...). I think a sharp low-light shot from the moving ferry is kind of impossible, though several stitched long lens shots of Manhattan from Staten Island might be cool.

Well, I agree with everybody about how well you dealt with the technial aspects. Super. I also really like the color and light in the shot. It just glows. And, just a restate, for a California guy, the notes are great.

thanks for all the tags/notes as I don't know all the main buildings in this skyline! Now I do :)

Excellent panorama. Was the ferry moving? If so, remarkable. I didn't realize a panorama could be done this way, considering the ship's movement. Technically, how did you accomplish capturing the series of photos?

Fantastic!

Andrew this is fantastic. I tried to take similar shots and know hard it is to get them stable given the boat rocking. Well done and thanks for the brilliant tags.
