Cold Chillin' by acastellano

Cold Chillin'

Today was our third day out on the tundra, and it was epic. For the first time we had sunny skies and the light was gorgeous all day. Not only were the bears out in force (we saw close to 30 today), but they were also in the mood to entertain. We watched this character for quite a while.

This was the first polar bear I had a chance to photograph in the wild. Quite a beauty if you ask me!

Yes, this is a real, live, adult polar bear. This bear was being released into the wild from Churchill, Canada. When bears wander into Churchill, they are captured and put into "polar bear jail" (for the safety of the bear and the people in town). They are cared for until they can be released into the wild. The polar bears are released when the Hudson Bay begins to freeze over, and they can walk out on the ice to hunt seals, the main source of their diet. Before the ice forms, there is very little for the bears to eat. They lose a tremendous amount of weight over the summer, and have to rebuild their stores during the winter months while they can go out and hunt on the ice.

Planting Seeds by acastellano

On my recent trip to Nepal, I went trekking with the executive director (and trekking guide extraordinaire) of a wonderful charity called Nepal SEEDS. Before heading up to the HImalayas, we did a short trek in the hills south of Kathmandu in order to visit two different schools supported by SEEDS. We were warmly welcomed by the students, who staged a performance of traditional Nepali singing and dancing for us. Here, a row of boys at the Sisneri School checks out the foreigners who have recently arrived to pay them a visit.
