today was Family Day. Matt and Venus invited me on a trip to Laurel Creek, where we experienced Nature. also, this.

Andre helped out tonight at the club meeting. it's midterm season, so attendance was somewhat attenuated. half of us were into off-camera lighting; the other half had never heard of it, so Andre and Joe helped out and did their own thing while I gave the others a primer on some of the basics - demonstrations of how changing the flash's angle illustrates form; showing how its distance from the subject affects falloff in the background, and so on. I tried to make it as hands-on as possible, and there were definitely a few "aha!" moments. it was a fun way to spend the meeting.

Sean prepared some shotgun shells with a special payload. I also got to fire Matt's over/under double-barrel for the first time today.

I recently opened up my computer to discover that the SATA data connector on one of my hard drives broke. six of the seven prongs were still there, but the plastic bit they were attached to got stuck in the cable and snapped off of the hard drive itself, leaving six prongs sticking out of the hard drive, hovering in air.

I needed data on the hard drive, and the power connection was still fine, so my roommate and I managed to cannibalize the cable, strip the wire, and solder directly onto the pins. and it worked! I managed to image the drive onto some free space. if my warranty has already elapsed, then I'll take the drive apart and create a series of photographs of it - otherwise, I'll get it fixed/replaced.
