Manhattan Memorial Lights

2007. View of the 9/11 memorial lights from Jersey City. It poured rain earlier that day so there was a lot of humidity and misty clouds in the sky.

WellingtonAndy: they are indeed. The memorials use 88 xenon arc lamps, 7,000 watts each. Assuming 8 hours of darkness, that's about 5,000 kw-hr's a night, or about $800 a night if the commercial rate in NYC is around $0.15/kw-hr.

I would have expressed my appreciation sooner but I have had the kiddo here in NYC and we've been keeping pretty busy.

Hey! I'm the editor for a hard-bound book that's currently in production, and found your photos via a Flickr search for great New Jersey photos.

The Star-Ledger is putting on a photo contest for the purpose of finding the absolute best photos of New Jersey, then publishing them in a fine-art coffee-table book. What's unique about this contest is that users are in the drivers seat, voting for the photos they think should be in the book. There's also a lot of prizes to be won ($20,000 worth), although for most photographers the state-wide exposure (especially if your photos make the book) is the reason to get involved.

We're calling it Great Destinations NJ. It's all free and I think your photos would be a great fit. You retain all rights and you get some great exposure for your website or Flickr page (we properly credit you, and link back to you all over the place, plus your website would be published if your photos made the book). If you've got a free minute and want a shot at getting published, winning prizes, or just want to see some other great New Jersey photos, head over to Great Destinations NJ.

Oh and we use the Flickr API so putting your photos on the Great Destinations NJ website is a click of a button.

If you'd like to know more about the project, or want to shoot me a FlickrMail, please feel free to do so.

      Thanks for your time!
      -Chris
