A followup to the previous post about flickr's blurry photo problem since they released their "liquid layout".

The image on the left is what every single vertically oriented photo looks like on my 1600x1200 resolution monitor.

What's maddening about this is they're showing an 800px image on the photo page. Theoretically that should be the same as the presaved image seen on the right, but it's not. What I see instead is a fuzzy downsampled version.

The image above is an example of a problem that's appeared on flickr since they released their "liquid layout" a couple of weeks ago. What flickr is doing with the liquid layout is downsampling images via the browser to fit the size of the window, and this results in soft images for some users.

If you view flickr from a relatively small monitor you probably haven't noticed this, as flickr is defaulting to the 640px image on smaller screens, but this doesn't mean that others aren't seeing your photos as blurry.

I've noticed this effect is most pronounced between 800px and 1024px, and most obvious on photos that include text. I've tested this on multiple browsers and on two different windows machines... I see the same thing every time. I don't have a mac to test it on.

I've complained about this in the help forum, but at this point I've lost faith that flickr intends to fix this problem.

One more photo from last Sunday's Anti-NATO demonstration. As the march moved west on Jackson across Michigan Ave, the wind whipped this flag into a frenzy.
