The Mailbox, Birmingham

Taken minutes before being kicked out by security for not having a permit.

And to think I was getting cynical about the state of the world...

BTW - I took some inspiration for this shot from the flickr user velco and the stunning pictures he takes.

Please check his shots out if you haven't already done so.

But did they explain where to get a permit? No? Just gives them the excuse to throw you out! It's the same in the Selfridges and I suspect the rest of the Bullring (which does make it feel more of a challenge to dodge the guards).

At least the photo was worth it.

To be fair they were really nice and apologetic about it. They said if I spoke to the marketing suite rah rah rah. I lost interest at that point. I love my photography but I can't be arsed groveling to take shots in a shopping centre.

On the plus side I got some nice light trail pictures (also on my photostream) that I wouldn't have found had they not ejected me.

Yeah, same thing happened to me in Selfridges, the woman who told me about it added that if I didn't put away my camera she would call the security guards. It's makes me feel so restricted when these monolithic places that want to make themselves part of our lives (the Mailbox has become an icon, and Selfridges is a landmark) make sure you remember that the places where you are encouraged to spend your time belong to someone else. It's really alienating.

      - But on to other things - you got the lovely light trail photos. Once again restrictions lead to further creativity. Mmmm.

Couldn't have put it better myself KCanard.

It's no wonder people (I was going to say kids but it's everyone these days) feel the need to graffiti stuff to make it feel like their own. It's very strange being in cities where everything is owned.
