oh no

Give me a break! This is so terrible. Why do they want to make their patrons feel like children?

The whole note is horrible, but I can't believe the teeny tiny "thank you"!!! Some people really have lost any sense of who libraries are for.

Funny, what I noticed was the annoying capitalization of every word and distinct lack of punctuation: Who's up for some "cell-phones eating?"

    mmmmmm, cell-phones.

I thought the cell phones were eating something... so what do they eat, anyway?

Man, that is one cold prickly. Why don't they add, "and up yours"?

okay, not to be a total bia, but really, what's so wrong with the note (grammar aside)? One of the branches where I teach at has some of the most obnoxious yell-into-cell-phone-whilst-drinking-double-b ig-gulp-and-eating-snickers-bar-patrons. However, people don't read signs so it won't solve the problem. Just b/c you can't eat/drink/gab doesn't mean your library/librarian isn't friendly...

I don't even know where to start - the "absolutely" - does this mean the library staff also? The Caps and grammer? The command tone softened by the tiny "thank you"? Not library friendly, not the image we should want to project to our patrons

Our library system finally gave up on it's fruitless attempts to ban cellphones and relies, as it should, on existing policies related to disruptive behavior.

Fabulous. That really makes me want to visit.

Sheer Willpower, the problem is that tone of the sign is extremely rude and authoritarian. We want people to feel welcome in our libraries, and we want to project a friendly, helpful image. You don't want people to walk in and feel like if they make any mistake at all they're going to end up in time out.

I won't be visiting that library anytime soon. My cell-phone has the munchies.

Well the sign may be harsh, but I happen to be a librarian and we also have a sign posted saying "No Cell Phone Use in the Library." People still use their phones though, and I know they can read or they wouldn't be in the library in the first place. What we, as librarians, is people to be respectful to other patrons and the library staff. So next time you are at your local library, turn your cell phone off before you go in.

But isn't my cell phone also my way of keeping in contact with my world? I get my email, can surf the library's web page with the browser, and text my friends to meet me there. We're talking behavior not technologoy.
    I am a librarian too! :-)

So... exactly how is cell phone usage disrespectful to others? Yes, possibly someone shouting while talking is disrespectful - that's a behavior issue, not a cell phone issue.

But normal rings and quiet talk? I don't find that disrespectful in the least.
