Evidently it's hard to find the hard drives
for them. And I couldn't get it open with
just the picks. I used a jeweler's
screwdriver to open the seams, then held them
open with the picks.
I thought it was amusing how it kept trying
to boot even though it had no hard disk.
I'd love to fix it if it didn't cost much. I
don't like the idea of being without one for
the next 2-3 months...
google the model number on the drive (if you
haven't already) and don't mention the term
'ipod' i bet you could find one. that
person says they found one for a hundred
bucks.
Yeah, but there are different sizes. I can
only put ones ending in 4GAL or 6GAL in
there, being 5mm high and 78.5mm long. BUT,
the 3006GAL drive is 30GB and has lower power
consumption than my 2004GAL!
Ahah! These guys supposedly sell the 3006, and are right on
the main drag in Akihabara. They also have a
web shop, but I have found time and again
that unless it's Amazon.co.jp, buying shit
online in Japan is not worth the hassle,
especially when I live so close to Tokyo and
can just take the train in and do it my
damned self.
I think I'll give 'em a call today and see if
they have any in stock.
It's so weird. The first thing I looked for
was info on upgrading an iPod hard drive, and
all I found was people saying it was
impossible to find the part. But then you
googled the part and voila we have a whole
bunch of options. Tom's Hardware even did a
review of the part (but not for iPod repair).
It seems like this should be easier info to
find.
Maybe I'll take a bunch of pics and annotate
them here and submit it somwhere. This info
should be widely available.

You going to fix it? it shouldn't be too hard, really.
hehe.. did you open up the case with a guitar pick? cuz that's a freaking excellent idea.. plastic, thin, no scarring.

toshiba europe will let you browse the models by number that they make
It looks like most people refer to it just as a 1.8 inch HD.

Ordered this just now. Doubling my storage capacity for $170ish is even better than buying a new one.
...Provided it works.
