It is a little hard to see, but this image was taken at Tampa International Airport. If you look closely, you can see that the "designer" has placed sign language representations of the letters next to the each. I'm sure they thought it was a great idea, but didn't stop to think "Hey, deaf people can't hear, but they aren't illiterate." Perhaps next on the docket is giant braille tiles for reading with your full hand.

Deaf people aren't all illiterate, but most hearing people ARE illiterate when it comes to sign language. Maybe the translation is for them not for deaf people! We must try not to feel patronized by every attempt at bridging the gap between the hearing and deaf communities.
