The Art of Bharatanatyam

The Art of Bharatanatyam

Bharatanatyam is a classic dance form originating in Tamil Nadu, a state in South India and is the known as the Indian National Dance. It is considered to be a fire-dance — the mystic manifestation of the metaphysical element of fire in the human body. Originating in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, it encompasses the elements of BHA — Bhava, or expression; RA — Ragam, or melody; THA — Thalam, or rhythm; and NATYAM — dance. The three main elements of this dance lie in the movement of the hands, the bells on the feet and the facial expressions used for story telling through dance.

Sultanahmet at Dawn

Sultanahmet at Dawn

This 17th century mosque, near Haghia Sophia, is famous for the beautiful blue tile work ornamenting its walls. Its surrounding six slim minarets distinguish it from other mosques which normally have two or four minarets. It was built by architect Mehmet Aga by the order of Sultan Ahmed I as a complex in seven years and became the most important mosque of the city, right in Sultanahmet square.
