The kids love to mist the garden and make it "rain". We have learned so much about moss and lichens during this process.

Here's a photo that clearly shows the lichen and the webs holding it all together...

Barb, that is just amazing!! I can't wait to show this to my kids as the hummers are just now back for the spring and we are studying lichen as well.

A student brought a hummingbird's nest in and it was the first time I'd seen one. It was about the size of a large thimble. Apparently the two eggs the hummer lays are the size of small peas!

You are quite welcome, cute! :)
When were learning about humming birds a year or so ago, we read that the nests are about the size of a small walnut and the eggs the size of navy beans. Since we did not have a real one about, we made one with a walnut and beans to get a feel for the size. SO tiny! I would just love to see a real one someday...

Thanks, Andini! Well, it was pretty simple. Just some gravel on the bottom (under the soil) and we ordered the mosses from this super little Etsy shop. She has some great info on her web site too. I am happy to answer any questions, but it is really easy. :)

Alice this is really wonderful. I have seen and done terrariums under glass but I really like this in the open... I see this project in our future! My son and I were just "studying" all of the moss in our forest out back last week.
This is really beautiful and a great learning expereince. So wondeful to observe upclose!
