eons ago there were those strange tethered balloons at London Bridge. Is it something of that ilk?
Incredible whatever it is.

i'm not old enough to remember eons ago - was it during the blitz? tee hee - ahem - sorry. it's not a balloon and it's not particularly near london bridge either

Our neighbour has the tethering equipment for a barage balloon in her garden. The concrete is so dense it has never been shifted.
Were you then looking up a chimney you young whipper snapper you? Perhaps at Battersea?

a2d  Pro User  says:

wow - if that was in my garden i'd definitely have sorted out some sort of balloon by now. or perhaps a balloon-supported death slide to work...

not a chimney and not in battersea.

noj - it does doesn't it. i was thinking of calling it "view of the moon from the bottom of the well", but i don't like long titles.

steve - good guess but no.

It's not one of the lights at Charing Cross? I think Helen had a shot of these a month or so ago. I'm off to check it out.

not many of them in London so we should narrow this down fairly quickly

jennyshayler  Pro User  says:

well i think it must be somewhere quite open if it is indeed a street lamp... otherwise there'd be too much light pollution. although this is london... hmm. maybe in a park.. or over a bridge.

noj - definitely a light bulb
myrtle - not a light in charing cross
jenny - it's not a streetlight - public but not municipal
dankus - not an uplighter
glenn - no optical instruments beyond my camera were used in the making of this pic

well work is rather stressful today so I thought I'd check in to chill out - oh and I caught sight of the lights on the front of my beloved Coli this morning and thought ...mmm from underneath they'd look a bit like that but there were would be far more light pollution.

the maddening thing is that the white part isn't symmetrical which is making me more and more bemused as to which bit is actually the bulb.

There are some rather bare looking Christmas bulbs hanging around in Carnaby Street at the moment.

Perhaps we could have a "which Christmas Decorations" thread. Those of you not familiar with the London Borough of Lewisham would be truly amazed to see the beauty that bedecks our streets. I'm beginging to think this is mondoagogos eye inverted and a2d is just teasing us with the idea it is a bulb.

Between the Savoy and Waterloo are basically the Thames and Waterloo Bridge and can't be on the south side of the bridge. So, a light for the stairs that descend to ground level on from the north side of the bridge?

a2d  Pro User  says:

well go ahead if you really think it isn't guessable. this is a distinctive feature of a place that has appeared on GWL numerous times, taken from a slightly different perspective. it doesn't seem to have stopped other people guessing...

so, to sum up what we have so far... it's a light, i'm looking up at it, it's not a streetlight, it's between Waterloo and Tate Modern and it is very near blackfriars road.

the next clue is that if this picture for guess where london wasn't underexposed, it would be a lot more colourful...perhaps it needs re-development?
