My family was convinced that these scared the flies away. Their justification: The flies would see their reflection projected in the bag and leave in fear. After my uncle hung the bag above a buffet of traditional hawaiian lunch my father approached the food, promptly turned away, and my grandmother exclaimed: "it works!"
