• the reflections on these fangs are amazing! - muddymu

The Business End

I was trying to photograph Petunia, but she kept attacking the camera (seriously!), so most shots didn't turn out. I got a few like this though, as well as some blurry ones of her on the lens itself. Ultimately I guess I got some good shots, though not much variety, cause she really wouldn't stop. She's a somewhat aggressive spider. An Asian birdeater from the Haplopelma genus.

Thanks guys! You should have seen me trying to get her from her enclosure to the shooting area. I tried to shoo her into a cup, but when you tap her back end to make her go forward, she instead turns around to attack what's tapping her.

Thanks, Lace :) Actually, a friend of mine suggested the name. I use my bathroom counter, printer paper, and a fluorescent light for the white background shots. And most tarantulas I've seen have red "mouths". I don't really know why.

Danny, the millipedes are doing good from what I can tell. I don't see the babies much, they stay hidden in the soil, but I assume they're still there. Their parents are doing good at least :P

How big is Petunia? Just wondering if a size 11 converse would do the job or not.
    Awesome pic!

    Thanks again guys :)

Thanks for the invite, Starfire, but "comment and award 5" is a bit over the top for me. Maybe if it were 2.

LOL, it's a good thing I decided to wait and come back to this. I was about to ask "What's a size 11 converse?", thinking it was some type of camera equipment and now realizing it's a shoe :P Oh yeah, a size 11 Converse would make short work of Petunia. She's only got a 5-6 inch legspan.

Hi! I love all your photos, they're awesome :) I have been wondering for some time about tarantulas' mouths. Specifically where they suck their food in, can you tag that part in this photo? (or one where it's better shown)

    Thanks!

Great shot. What lens? Do you have a magnifier (DCR or something) on there? Really nice work in your stream!

  31. Furryscaly (35 months ago | reply)

Thanks, glad you like it. Actually, all I shoot with is a Sony DSC-H1. This shot was taken on my bathroom counter using the macro setting and a fluorescent light stacked on DVDs. The spider was very large and very very close ;)
