You would think with all of the increased
security taking place around the world they
would protect their own systems, but I guess
I thought differently...I had no clue airport
technology could be so vulnerable...lol
I don't get why this is so funny. Is it
because it runs windows? Hellooooo?
Everything runs windows. The sys admin just
needs to toggle the alert bubbles. Anybody
who runs critical machines doesn't use
"windows firewall" to secure the
box. Further, antivirus software may well
cause more popups in any graphical operating
system. Don't get me wrong I'm not partial to
Windows. Finally, this computer doesn't even
need to be secure... its a kiosk with a big
screen showing publicly available
information - we don't need to secure these
things as if it were Fort Knox. This has
nothing to do with airport security... but so
long as people are bored and want to flame,
let the flames burn on.

corpate network, so everything should be
secured incase a virus gets out, what would
you prefer around an extra $80 for another
lincease for the antivirus software or taking
down all the computers to stop the virus
transmitting/duplicating itself across the
network?
As an airport employee, I can assure you that
these computers are NOT in any way connected
to any computer networks or the internet.
They are called FIDS displays, and are run by
headless computers that each airline updates
via a terminal that is separate from the rest
of the network. This airports system just
happens to run XP, as some of the newer
systems do. At my airport, the system is DOS
and SSH based.
Nothing to see here. Take your shit stirring
elsewheres, please.
@joelanders42 usually when there is a
firewall installed on a computer windows
recognizes it and this error does not
'pop-up'. Same with anti-virus. Just let
the people enjoy the irony. After the shit
we put through in the security lines dealing
with the TSA employees we need a good laugh.

That is what happens when our airports rely on Windows. Very sad indeed. BUT FUNNY!!! lol

u'd think that the airport would spend its money on firewalls for its computers instead of risking all its computer networks fall to a virus...!
John Kittelsrud (71 months ago | reply)
As an IT guy if I knew that a system as going to be exposed to the public like this one was I'd turn that off. Then again it did make a good picture.

@skokerz:
How could you update the headless PC remotely without the PC somehow being connected to the network?

I'm 99% certain this is Vancouver airport. If not, it's another airport running the same software, as the colors & typeface are identical.
