This lighthouse was built by Elzy Burroughs, starting in 1802 and completed and lit Jan. 17, 1805.

Burroughs was appointed keeper of the light by President Thomas Jefferson.

The Great Storm of 1933 created the inlet cutting the light off of the mainland.

The lighthouse was abandoned by the U.S. Coast Guard in 1963. Efforts to maintain the light are ongoing today.
