Seeds Drop into Pond (8 of 8)

    Newer Older

The stem gives way just below the seed pod causing the pod to hang down ensuring that all the seeds drop into the pond. What a marvelous way to make sure this plant continues to spread and grow. Lotus is considered the "kudzu" of the pond world. It can take over an entire shallow pond or bog in just a few years.

We purchased our white lotus plant in a gallon bucket in 1988 for $60. It was a container plant in our backyard water garden until 1997 when we moved to our home with a large pond where we planted the lotus tuber. Ten years later, our white lotus is growing all around the edges of our large, deep pond. Not bad for a $60 investment, 19 years ago. We have had years of beauty and pleasure from this fascinating plant. It provides shade and shelter for our fish and makes our pond so pretty. We have added two red lotus in recent years.
