Medusa, Temple of Apollon, Didyma

    In Explore, Jan 16, 2007, #270

The Temple of Apollon is in Didyma, an antique city which is in the Miletos district near Aegean coast. This temple's first layer is archaic and 2.600 years old. Hellenistic layer is from 300 BC and unfinished. The temple is also known as Didymaion and it was a very famous and sacred centre of soothsaying place of oracles of Miletos.
This snake-haired Medusa's head is in the entrance of the temple.

How do you get such wonderful results from your scanner? This is amazing. Great detail and light.

      Thank you, John!.
Grant: Thanks for your kind words.
I use HP Scanjet 4500c, and in colour scanning mode. I sweep away dust and time related spots with a photo ed.program. Colour scans of B&W prints are more suitable some contrast adjustments if they are in low-contrast.
These prints are processed in my dark-room many years ago, and they are generally 13x18 cm.

      Beautiful Medusa shot.
Every time I see her face I cannot imagine that she was as negative as often described in the mythology. She is present in so many places.

      Thanks Zignani !.
This medusa was a symbol of Didymaion. She has snake-hairs and can reverse humans to stone pieces.

Sert güneş ışığında çekildiği için bu karenin gri tonlaması oldukça zor olmuştu, agrandizör baskısı sırasında.
Didim Apollon tapınağı Priene'den sonra gördüğüm en güzel ören yeridir.
