Dead Slow lent me this at brunch on Sunday.

You should also have a Yashica more often. It's so hot!

      Lucky you!

I've been trying to convince my mother to give me hers.

Problem is, she claims that she already gave it to me. I would remember that, right?

And the bit about more brunches, too!

    10. Leah Reich (40 months ago | reply)

Thanks everyone! Now i just have to figure out if I'm capable of taking a decent image with it.

I do feel very lucky, I must say. It is really, ridiculously hot. You're right about that, Matt.

Christopher is nice enough to let me borrow it for a few weeks even! (He has two, so he's still using his other one.)

So, um, if in a few weeks you can't find me and all my mail is marked Return To Sender, please don't be surprised.

Orrin, maybe your mom gave it to the other Orrin.

How did I not see this???

So, um, have you shot anything with it? I just went on a stroll around the 'hood with Vera. I shot half a roll and each time I took a picture I was like, "Ummm, did I just take a picture?" Not a lot of feedback going on but I swear she's in working order. Is it just me? I'm used to the snappy loudness of my K1000's shutter. Am I expecting too much? Is Vera just more of the quiet type? Insight is appreciated.

      Thanks everyone!

Jen, it's still at the shop but I think I get it back next week, and then I get to borrow it for a while longer (the owner just bought himself a Rolleiflex, and he has another Yashica Mat, so I think I'm safe). Can't wait to load some of your film in it. Thank you! xoxoxo

      Thanks Bradley. =)

Sarah - Um, because you have a life and other things to do besides look through my entire stream?

And yes, I have shot with it. You can see the shots in this set.

Here's the thing - you should get a SNAP! when you press the shutter release. I would get it occasionally but sometimes I wouldn't. I thought, hmmm, maybe this is different? Because I too am used to the K1000 and had no idea what I was doing. But I had a bad feeling because sometimes I'd get the click and a lot of times I wouldn't - then I got two (sigh) rolls back and my bad feeling was confirmed. On the color roll, about 5 or 6 shots were there, and on the b&w roll I had two. All the rest were blanks. Meaning the button depressed and the roll advanced, but the shutter never fired.

Apparently Yashica Mats are temperamental suckers. I took this one in for my friend (always loan stuff to me, I'll baby it) and it's being repaired now. The shutter was screwed up. You might want to have someone look at it and make sure the shutter is firing.

Fuckin' a (I have a mouth like a sailor, in case you didn't know...). I swear it sounded all snappy before I put film in but I didn't play with it yesterday when I loaded it, only when if first arrived a few weeks ago so now I'm doubting that memory. Snarlsnarlsnarl.

    22. Leah Reich (39 months ago | reply)

Well goddamn. (You should see the word I want to put here. Begins with c and ends in sucker, but think of the children.)

Don't be an idiot like me and put a second roll in. You will waste really nice Fuji Neopan that way. Check it out beforehand.

What do you have in there now?

    23. sara + h (39 months ago | reply)

160 Portra NC. I'm debating whether to finish the roll or just rip it out. I'm quite certain the shutter isn't functioning properly with it in. I'm out $4 that way. If I expose the whole roll (or try to) then I'll be out another $5 or so for processing. I'm leaning toward cutting my loses. That way I can at least have the satisfaction of confirming or denying my memory of snappiness.

    24. Leah Reich (39 months ago | reply)

Ooh, tough choice. We need to find you a photolab where you can make buddies with the people there so they'll give it a quick look - if there's nothing on it, they shouldn't charge you.

'Cos I could be wrong, y'know.

But honestly, I'm not an expert but film in it shouldn't affect snappiness. If it ain't snappin', it ain't snappin'.

    25. sara + h (39 months ago | reply)

I know it. Which is why I'm snarling again.

    26. Leah Reich (39 months ago | reply)

I bet your eyes get super blue when you snarl though.

Hmm. I'd run the whole roll and see what happens. I mean, you probably won't get any shots but better to find out that way and maybe get shots than rip it out and find out you were fine all along. Either way, you'd be out a few bucks. It's just whether you'll be out an extra few bucks.

      Then take it in.

or come visit me RIGHT NOW and we'll go to my photolab and then to the little camera shop where my friend's camera is. And then we'll have ice cream.

okay, just to interject into this little convo you two are having here...sarah:: how many times do i have to tell you to go to national camera downtown. i'm serious. these guys (and gals) seriously know their shit about old film cameras. and they're nice, and don't make you feel dumb, and couldn't give a crap whether or not you bought the camera (or anything else for that matter) there. also- you'll probably have to wipe their drool off your camera afterwards. we'll chat tonight. (screw cleaning up, i'd rather knit, obv)

    28. julia:elise (39 months ago | reply)

      oh yeah... hey leah!

    29. Leah Reich (39 months ago | reply)

yeah, listen to Julia. and screw cleaning up, go knit.

      Hi J! xoxo

    30. sara + h (39 months ago | reply)

Oh ye of little faith, Julia. You don't think your voice has been ringing in my ears since I came home from my failure of a photowalk??? You've been talking to me in my head all afternoon. Quite loudly, I might add.

    31. julia:elise (39 months ago | reply)

good. (and i'm glad it was loud :))

      see you later.

    32. sara + h (39 months ago | reply)

Um, I just took a pic with Vera (I bothered to set the correct aperture/exposure but not to focus) and there was definite snap. Hmm. Scratching my head. Maybe I'm just going deaf and didn't hear the snap when I was outside with lots of ambient noise around.

    33. Leah Reich (39 months ago | reply)

Ok see? This is why you don't just pull the whole thing apart, Ms. Impetuous. It could be that you didn't hear it. Or it could be the same problem with mine - because mine fired sometimes and not others. This is why I say finish the roll. Take another few and see if you get snaps. Then get it developed and go see those nice people. If you've got some photos and some blanks, you've got a possible shutter problem.

    34. lucie777 (39 months ago | reply)

      such a beautiful camera!
