August 2008 veg

These are my two raised vegetable beds. They are stuccoed cinderblock, eight feet by eight feet.

The one on the left is tomatoes (Early Girl, Better Boy, heirloom yellow pear, Sweet 100), collards, cukes, and an artichoke. The tomatoes are in cages but they're so heavy with fruit they just fell over a couple of weeks ago. Hasn't stopped the tomatoes. I'm picking a dozen large and a large bowlful of cherry tomatoes every day.

The right one is my three sisters bed, with two kinds of sweet corn, three kinds of squash (butternut, acorn and crookneck) Blue Lake green beans, and a few sunflowers. The corn is OMG awesomely sweet and tender, and the squirrels have only taken one ear so far.

In between is the herb garden, with lovage (the tall floppy thing), tarragon (the other floppy thing), chives, thyme, parsley, lavender, rosemary, sage, and fennel. The two glass things are garden cloches - like bell jars for frost cover.
