Cherry House Quilt Along

    Newer Older

All done! Find the quilt instructions here at Cherry House's quilt along. While I really like Cherrie's parallel line quilting, I knew I could do that (have done that on many a quilt), and took the small size of this project to be a chance to try something new. I love the "raindrops in a puddle" look of the circular quilting, but it is REALLY finicky and there's a lots of puckers and puffs. I'm glad I tried it though, and the little quilt is on it's way to the Baltimore Early Head Start Program as per Cherrie's call to all quilters. :-)

This is really neat! Did you have it all planned out or did you do one group of circles & then decide what to do next? Did you do one whole group at a time, moving from center to edge or go back and forth between groups?

Love the quilting - and the quilt looks just as great with print squares instead of the solid.

Love the circles! I was thinking that if i weren't so scared to try it, I'd do (smaller, much smaller) circles in the sections between the columns of colours, but I am a little too scared of free-motion just yet. Yours look so good though that maybe I should practise a bit on some smaller scrap fabric and work my way up to it.

Did you do the circles using freemotion or your walking foot? The visual juxtaposition of the straight line and circles is incredible.

Thanks everyone for all the quilting love!
To answer a few questions, I did use my walking foot. I drew the center circles (sort of evenly distributed all over the quilt) with a water soluble marking pen and then carefully followed the line with the walking foot. For each successive circle, I lined up the edge of the foot with the previous line. As the circles got bigger, and the curve less extreme, the quilting went easier. Of course, pulling the quilt, even gently, around those curves resulted in some distortion. I basted with safety pins, so maybe this would be the kind of situation where spray-baste would be more appropriate. I switched thread colors every 3 to 5 rounds. I also worked on all the circles at once, adding rings all over until I liked the sizes and overlaps. I did not plan at the outset how large each one would be.

Wow! This is so beautiful. I started a similar quilting project with concentric circles, but it's lain in the corner for about a month since I had to unpick 8 rings after I caught a fold in the backing. I can't see your puckers and puffs in this photo -- though I like the way the fabric puffs in the center of each drop, and between them.

      But again, really,super, beautiful.

Thanks Dan. I understand your pain with the concentric circles! Mine looks fine -- as long as you don;t get too close! ;-)
