The Jacksonville Zoo had a member preview this weekend of the new Butterfly Hollow exhibit. I thought this would be a good excuse to do a photo walk and enjoy some beautiful Spring weather. Pictured here is a Julia butterfly.

Butterfly Hollow Open March 9 - September 30
Come visit Butterfly Hollow at the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens. Wander down paths through a lush tropical forest and meadow, and enjoy a magical landscape with flowering plants that provide the nectar for hundreds of native butterflies. If you’re very lucky, these delicate creatures may even land on your hand or nose!

Let your imagination take flight as you look for fairy houses, garden art, water features, comfortable seating and beautiful arbors. Butterfly pupae will be on display inside the exhibit, so guests young and old can experience the wonder of the butterfly’s life cycle. As the season progresses, new species will be added, so there is always a good excuse to come back and visit the Hollow again and again.

Professor Wendy Perrywhistle, an expert on butterflies and the fairy world from Eldonshire, England, has posted her journal entries throughout the exhibit to help guests discover the butterflies and the important role they play in our environment. Visitors will also see evidence of gnomes and trolls that will help tell the story about butterflies and the environment they live in. www.jacksonvillezoo.org/

Palm Of Season Present

Palm Of Season Present

In contrast to Debris Of Season Past , that I captured in the Julington-Durbin Preserve, this back-lit palm frond is full of life and glows in vivid color! This shot looks better on black; press L!

Julington-Durbin Preserve is a 2,031 acre (822 hectares) property located in portions of both Duval and St. Johns counties. The Preserve protects approximately 9 miles of shore line along Julington and Durbin Creeks, both of which are tributaries to the St. Johns River.

The area is located on a peninsula formed at the confluence of Julington and Durbin creeks, and has approximately nine miles of shoreline along the two creeks. The peninsula is a long sandy ridge that grades into floodplain swamp and marsh along the creeks’ shores. Natural communities consist of sandhill along the higher areas near the center of the peninsula and flatwoods at the lower elevations. The preserve contains extensive floodplain wetlands, providing water quality and floodplain protection for both creeks and the St. Johns River.

Known wildlife at the preserve include bald eagle, osprey, gopher tortoise, bobcat, turkey, deer and numerous species of wading and songbirds. Manatees seasonally swim in both creeks. [sjrwmd.com/recreationguide/julington-durbin/]

It might be a reach, but here is my tribute to the 60th day of the year. Due to 2012 being a leap year, the 60th day is on February 29th. Enjoy the extra day!
