LA Railway: "Byrd: The Antarctic in Color", 1937

LA Railway: "Byrd: The Antarctic in Color", 1937

Despite Admiral Byrd's first rejections of having an artist on his Antarctic expeditions, he finally said yes to David Abbey Paige.

Info from The Ohio State University Libraries:

"Records indicate that Paige completed '100 pastels of various sizes; about 300 pencil drawings of aurura australis, and eight portraits in charcoal of the men as they appeared through the Winter Night, with their picturesque beards.' Further documentation in the Byrd files states that Paige exhibited some of the works in various galleries upon his return to the United States in the 1930s."

LA Railway: "Ballet Russe with Philharmonic Orchestra", 1939

From the 7/16/1997 Los Angeles Times obituary:

"Alexandra Danilova, a famed ballerina in Europe and America and one of the last survivors of the Imperial Russian Ballet in St. Petersburg before the revolution, has died in New York. She was 93.

[snip]

"Settling in the United States in the 1930s, Danilova performed frequently in California and throughout the country, often dancing abroad in a career that lasted more than 40 years. She became a U.S. citizen in 1946.

[snip]

"As star of a succession of Ballet Russes, both in Europe and the United States, Danilova's most famous performances included 'Gaite Parisienne,' 'Le Beau Danube,' 'Coppelia' and 'Raymonda.'"

Pass displayed on page from the October 1997 issue of Wired magazine.
