Wonderful smoke effects. Was the second engine working or just hitching a lift?

    7. tarboat (52 months ago | reply)

@Eagle1942: What happens is that there are two trains that enter the pit at different times. Usually the coaches are then combined and the train comes back with just the front locomotive working.

Was the smoke white or black? Black smoke from trains I shot with Kodachrome would always come out white unless I used a UV filter. Is it the same with digital cameras?

    9. tarboat (52 months ago | reply)

@hamhankjohn: In such cold conditions the exhaust is mainly white steam with occasional darked patches as the locomotive is fired. It can be tricky avoiding burning out the exhaust to white with no detail in an exposure of a darkish train but digital certainly makes this easier.
